Dog’s Tail Grass

Dog's tail grass (Cynosurus cristatus) is a perennial, sod-forming plant that belongs to the grass family (Gramineae or Poaceae). She is on the Dutch Red List of plants as common, but significantly decreased. Dog's tail grass can be recognized by the constriction of the leaf. The plant is fairly resistant to enter, but will die in severe winters. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

The plant is 20-60 cm high. The shoot is base white or yellowish brown. The youngest leaf of a shoot along the midrib collapsed. The relatively clear ribbed leaves are up to 3 mm wide and the leaf sheaths not inflated. The truncated, cut, white ligule to 2 mm long.

Dog's tail grass blooms in June and July with an 2-10 cm long, linear aarpluim whose bloeias a zigzag shape. Along the axis are small bundles. A bundle consists of a kortgesteeld, 4.5 mm long fruitful (fertile) and a kortgesteeld, 5 mm long, sterile Aartje. The fertile-desk consists of 2 to 5 flowers. The 1.4 mm long, purple helmet boxes are dirty. The lower husk (lemma) of the lower flower of the fertile Submit Thread to mucronate to shortly genaald. The sterile spikelets are up to 10 free, rough, narrow, pointed spine kafjes.

The fruit is a fruit crop.

The plant is found on moist, moderately rich soil in meadows, roadsides and embankments.
