Akkerandoorn (Stachys arvensis) is an annual plant in the mint family (Labiatae Lamiaceae ie). The plant is native to western Europe, western Asia and north Africa and is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and very much reduced.
The plant is 7-30 cm long and flowers with pale pink, sometimes white, 6-8 mm long flowers from July to autumn. The middle slip of the lip is much larger than the lateral. The corolla is almost as long as the calyx vijfslippige. The calyx and bracts are short hairs. The flowers are 2 to 6 units with the appearance wreaths.
The upright, horizontal or ascending stems are often closely branched and glandular hairs. The lower leaves are oval to round and have a little heart shaped base. The upper leaves are long and are sitting or have a short handle.
The black, shiny fruit consists of four split nuts.
Akkerandoorn occurs on rich soil in vegetable gardens, farmland and roadsides.
