Taro

Taro (Colocasia esculenta) is a crop from the family of aroids (Araceae), which has been cultivated for over 2000 years as a food plant.

Taro is now cultivated in humid, tropical and subtropical climates. For export it is planted in Egypt, Costa Rica, the Caribbean, Brazil and India.

Use
Used are mainly the starchy rhizome of the plant. They are boiled like potatoes. In the producing countries, the leaves and stems are eaten as a vegetable. They are high in minerals, vitamin A, B and C.
