The Flat Naiad

Flat naiad (Potamogeton compressus) is a perennial plant belonging to the naiad family (Potamogetonaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as relatively rare and moderately decreased. The plant is native to Europe, Asia.

The stem, often with narrow wings, is 0.9 to 2 m long and is highly branched but little water in stagnant water are often heavily branched. The green or brown colored leaves are submerged and up to 20 cm long and 2-5 mm wide. The magazine has five thick veins running longitudinally in between many very fine veins. At the top of the leaf transverse veins. The leaf tip is suddenly focused. At the leaf base are swollen glands. The amplexicaul stipules are 2.5 to 4 cm long, not fused with the blade.

Flat Naiads blooms from July to August with small, reduced flowers, with ten to twenty pieces to a 2 cm long spike shapes. The stem of the spike is 3-4 cm long and 2 mm thick. The flowers are pollinated under water, what is called hydrofilie.

The approximately 4 mm large fruits have a 3-4 mm long, straight beak and the ventral side usually does not lump. The fruit is a nut. The fruits are dispersed by water, which is called hydrochorie.

The plant is also winter buds (Turion).
