Gagea Lutea

The bosgeelster (Gagea lutea) is a perennial plant belonging to the lily family (Liliaceae). It is a plant of moist, rich soil in deciduous forests and grasslands. The species is native to Europe and East Asia.

The plant is 10-30 cm tall and forms a round ball focused. The yellow-green, self-contained ground blade is 5-10 mm wide. Sometimes there is a breeding ball in the armpit of the leaf.

The bosgeelster blooms from March through May and yellow, 1,5-2,5 cm wide flower. The two bracts of bloeiwjze are lanceolate. The inflorescence is a screen with two to seven flowers. Petals oblong with a blunt point. After flowering they will roll back and fade dull green.

The fruit is a capsule. The seed has an ant-roll and is therefore dispersed by ants.

The species is hexaploid, chromosome number was 2n = 72.
