The Large Knapwood

The large knapwood (Centaurea scabiosa) is a plant belonging to the Compositae family (Asteraceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of rare plants and moderately decreased. The plant is also spread along the rivers and use in ornamental gardens. On the parasitic plant Centauri broomrape (Orobanche elatior), a parasitic plant.


The plant is 30-120 cm high. The long, dark green leaves are about to double veerspletig piece.


The large blooms from June to October knapwood pink to reddish purple, 1,5-2,5 cm wide, single flowers. Inflorescence a tube head with flowers. There is a ring of sterile flowers fringe-like edge. The omwindselbladen are like those of bergcentaurie (Centaurea monatana) fringe-like incision and have no spine at the top.


The fruit is a nut and an ant sandwich. The fruit fluff is hygroscopic.


The plant of the grass on slopes in relatively dry, chalky soil.
